The most simple Fire Rated Shutters activation in a fire situation is by use of a fusible link. When the temperature at the link reaches approximately 75°C (other temperatures available) this sacrificial link releases the fire rated shutter to close fully. However, most frequently a fire rated shutter will be part of an overall fire (and smoke) control system designed to save life and limit damage. That system will have the necessary sensors and activation means independent of the normal power supply and backed up by battery to control all elements including the fire rated shutter.
Please note we now manufacture Single and Twin Skin lath Fire Rated Roller Shutters tested to 4 Hours. Exova Fire and Safety. BSEN 1634-1.
The double skin insulated lath offers additional heat radiation protection.
As part of our ongoing commitment to provide clients with a complete range of security options, we are now able to offer Fire Curtains and Smoke Curtains. Please call for details.
The electrically operated Fire Rated Shutter system when initiated by a 24 volt DC 3amp supply from the fire control system, will release a solenoid to immediately commence the fire shutter to close at a controlled rate until it is fully closed. In the event of a fire test or false alarm the main fire control system when reset will allow the optional fire rated shutter system auto re-set to engage and return the system to normal operation. Delayed operation can be provided via a timer to delay the shutter closure for up to 5 minutes to allow escape, this would normally be in conjunction with audio visual alarm.
How do Fire Rated Shutters work normally?
Fire Rated Roller Shutters are most frequently installed to operate only in the event of fire. Their primary objective therefore is that they operate in the event of fire. It is for this reason that traditionally fire doors were manual spring counterbalance operated, doors were counterbalanced heavy and are difficult to use and are not suitable for frequent use by other than physically strong individuals particularly on larger sizes. Electric systems now predominate the fire rated shutters installed. The system works extremely well and will comply, when correctly specified, with health and safety requirements. Fire rated shutters are frequently key operated (to prevent unauthorised use) or by push button, providing ease of use should the fire rated shutter be used for security. For safety reasons the position that the fire shutter is operated from must be in full view of the entire door, operation requires that constant pressure must be maintained on the button by the operator until the fire rated shutter is fully closed. Additional safety must be provided for pedestrians if this is not the case.
How does the Fire Rated Shutter work in a power failure?
A hand chain is provided which can be used to open the fire rated shutter in the event of power failure. This however is extremely slow and would not be a practical means of escape. Many fires start in a buildings electrical system, which would result in no power being available to re-open a door. Should this be a requirement a full battery backup system can be provided to allow the fire shutter a number of open close cycles when no power is available.
