Our Fire Shutters are tested and certified at Exova Fire Global Safety to ensure compliance with exacting industry standards. Our products can provide up to 4 hours fire resistance. There are many areas where fire resistance testing is required by national and international building regulations.
Fire Shutters provide compartmentation and are primarily used to protect people in the event of a fire and additionally to allow them to escape safely. Fire and smoke are contained and prevented from spreading. Fire protection has developed over many years with older fire shutters activated by heat around the doorway and thus allowing the fire shutter to fully close protecting property whilst occupants would have vacated the building.
Nowadays, fire shutters are closed normally via a complimentary alarm system. Consideration should be given to occupants as the remote triggering of an alarm which closes fire shutters in remote areas without warning may cause entrapment in certain circumstances.
The use of fire control panels to give ample warning of impending fire shutters closure is advised. Whilst audible warnings are fine for most people, don’t forget those with hearing impediments who will require a visual warning system. If fire shutters are used in escape routes, they can be partially closed at first, then later fully closed to enable safe evacuation. Normal configuration allows the fire rated shutters to either open or close on a command from the fire alarm, thus providing a barrier or, if applicable, allowing safe evacuation of the building.
Please note that we manufacture Single and Twin Skin Lath Fire Rated Roller Shutters tested to Exova Fire and Safety BSEN 1634-1 and providing up to 4 Hours of fire resistance. The Double Skin Insulated Lath offers additional heat radiation protection.

FIRAS is a certification scheme from Exova Warrington Fire for companies installing fire protection products and systems. A FIRAS certificate is a measure of installer competency, thus providing confidence to specifiers, enforcement authorities, building owners and occupiers.

The installation of a fire shutter and its supporting structure is subject to building control regulations and if doubt exists as to the correct product to use, it is important to seek guidance from a Building Control or Fire Officer.
Fire shutters cannot be affixed to lightweight and hollow blocks. Please contact us for advice on fitting and for structural recommendations. Please note: Westwood Security Shutters Ltd does not wire back to the fire alarm system. This is the responsibility of the fire alarm engineer to supply (if required), control and commission.
